I'm Robyn Baker, creator of Intuitive Exercise. I have worked in the fitness industry for the past
14 years, 6 of which were during my struggle with anorexia and exercise
addiction. I'm a certified personal trainer, a certified
indoor cycling instructor, certified on whole body vibration
exercise, a certified Pilates instructor, and a member of the Yoga Alliance with my 200-hour
I developed anorexia when
I was 17 years old and was hospitalized at the age of 18. The 10
years following my first hospitalization were a struggle to say the least,
and I eventually became addicted to exercise which led me to become a personal
trainer and give up my dreams as a professional performer in musical theater.
As a result of my exercise
addiction I suffered various health concerns including a stress fracture due to
osteoporosis and heart irregularities. At the age of 27, I entered in
patient treatment for a second time and began a difficult but authentic path
of honest recovery.
The most difficult part of my
recovery has been finding a way to maintain a healthy and recovery-centered
relationship with exercise. After many slip-ups and minor relapses, I created a
method called Intuitive Exercise, which utilizes mindfulness techniques,
meditation and intense self-inquiry practices.
Almost 3 years ago I began my own
body positive and recovery-centered fitness studio, Asteya Fitness, as a way to
honor my own recovery while still working in the fitness and health industry and
teaching others the method of intuitive exercise.
Today, I work and play in Orange
County, California with my children, husband and 2 crazy cats. I'm a community member of the Yoga and Body Image Coalition, a
contributor to the mental health website, The Libero Network and an activist
working to stop fitspiration. I remain committed to my recovery
and hope to bring the method of Intuitive Exercise to all who struggle to find
a healthy relationship with exercise in their eating disorder recovery.
Never struggle with that question again!
